The FreeLens Award for Young Photojournalism

FreeLens, the biggest German organization of photojournalists, offered the FreeLens Award for the Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism. The prize endowed with EUR10,000 goes to the most impressive work of all festival exhibitions. Furthermore two »Honourable Mentions« including prize money of 1,000 euros each will be awarded. All three honored photographers will be invited to Hannover to be a guest of the festival.

More than 1000 submissions for the FreeLens Award from more than 70 countries have arrived at the festival office. The best 60 works have been selected by a team of curators consisting of Rolf Nobel (professor of photography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover and head of the photo festival), Stephanie Bunk (curator of the FreeLens Gallery Hamburg), Bertram Solcher (FreeLens chairman) and Isabel Winarsch (chief organiser of the Lumix Festival) and will be exhibited in several pavilions on the expo grounds during the festival in June.

The winner of the three prizes will be chosen by a six-person jury made of declared experts of the photojournalism scene: Thomas Hoepker (Magnum Photos) as jury president, Ruth Eichhorn (GEO), Christian Pohlert (F.A.Z.), Peter Bitzer (laif), Søren Pagter (Danish School of Journalism, Århus) and Lutz Fischmann (FreeLens). The granting of the FreeLens Award will be on Saturday, 19th of June, during the closing party of the festival.

lumix multimedia award

The 2nd Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism 2010 will be the premiere for the »Lumix Multimedia Award« including prize money of 5,000 euros for the best journalistic multimedia production.

170 photographers from 41 countries have applied for this award which will be given in addition to the FreeLens Award. The chance to create another narrative layer beyond the photographs seems to be used by more and more photographers.

We have already preselected the 21 best works which will be shown during the festival, on a big canvas in our photo studio as well as on iMacs in the big areaway of the Design Center. You can already receive an impression in the clips of about 1 minute shown online.

A jury consisting of Jan Hillebrecht (GEO), Fabian Mohr (Zeit.de), Kay Meseberg (frontal21.de), Robert Wenkemann (FAZ) and Markus Matthes (Panasonic) will then choose the one work which receives the Lumix Multimedia Award on the final party on Saturday, 19th of June.
