The co-founder of the renown US photo agency Contact Press Images, David Burnett, can rightly so be called an old hand in photojournalism. Throughout the roughly four decades of his photographic career the 63 year-old visited around 70-80 countries, a number he himself cannot confirm officially. If one considers how many topics he has covered as a photojournalist over the years, Burnett can be called a universalist beyond question: Whether sports, country-reportage or portrait – Burnett has done it all, and as if the multitude of photographical genres where not occupying enough, he has been using almost every format the photographic industry has to offer, from 35mm to large format film.



David Burnett has always pursued his occupation at the highest stage and with great success: He has won several top awards for his work, including USA Press Photographer of the Year, World Press Photo Award and the highly regarded Robert Capa Gold Medal of the Overseas Press Club of America. From 7.30 pm on the opening day of the Lumix Festival (Wednesday, 16th June) his work will provide the visitors with an exciting insight into the past 40 years of photojournalism.

Carolyn Drake / english

Before her career as a photographer, the 38-year old American Carolyn Drake spent most of her time in front of the computer as a multimedia-producer and designer. Eventually she had enough of perceiving the world through the internet. She took a time off and traveled through Southeast Asia. She went on to study Photography at the International Center of Photography in New York and subsequently graduated with a Master of Visual Communication in Ohio.



After an internship at the renowned magazine National Geographic and a photo-job at the Palm Beach Post she went to Ukraine for a year endowed with a Fulbright scholarship. There she created her highly lauded work about the devastated coal industry.



Currently, she lives in Istanbul where she has been photographing throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. Carolyn Drake has received numerous awards and accolades, including the World Press Photo Award 2008 in the category »Daily Life Stories«.

Sergey Maximishin, one of the most important photojournalists in Russia, is coming to the 2nd Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism. He will speak about his work in the auditorium of the Design Center on Thursday, 17th June starting at 7.30 pm. Already while he served in the military he was a photographer for the Soviet military club in Cuba. After studying physics he decided to also study photojournalism in St. Petersburg. He worked as a photojournalist for Iswestija, one of the largest daily newspapers of Russia. His works have been published in stern, Time, Focus, The Wall Street Journal and other leading print media worldwide. Besides several national prizes Sergey Maximishin received the World Press Photo award twice in the categories »arts and entertainment« and »daily life«. He covers a wide range of topics: Amongst others he took photographs in India and Iran, but primarily in his native country Russia. His photos often show scenes of everyday life, which he captures with his camera in bizarre and wondrous moments.

Ernesto Bazan / english

Untill a year ago the Italian photographer Ernesto Bazan was mainly known to insiders - although he had already been awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the Grant of Mother Jones Foundation for photojournalism, the World Press Photo Award and the scholarship of the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation.

But then, at the New York Photo Festival in May 2009, his book »Cuba« was granted the 1st prize for the best photobook of the year. This was his ultimate breakthrough. When Ernesto Bazan signed copies of »Cuba« at the photojournalism-festival Visa Pour l´Image in Perpignan, many visitors carried their book home like a precious trophy.



Ernesto Bazan, who hails from Palermo, lived in Cuba from 1992 to 2006 and gave workshops in photography. In the meanwhile he created his exceptional book »Cuba«, a mixture of narrative, surreal, and athmospheric pictures. His photography is based on the roots of journalistic photography, but Bazan's darkish black and white photographs are a crossover between photojournalism and art-photography. With each picture one draws a new conclusion. For friends of photography this is nonetheless inspiring.

Wojciech Grzedzinski / english

Polish photographer Wojciech Grzedzinski will give a lecture in the auditorium of the Design Center on Friday, 18th June, starting at 7.30 pm. Only 30 years old, Grzedzinski is the festival’s youngest lecturer, but he has already an impressive career. After studying Applied Social Sciences, Ethnology, Anthropology and Pedagogy, Grzedzinski worked for various newspapers and agencies, including Reuters and AFP. He is mostly interested in photographing humans. His pictures show people in their everyday lives as well as in extreme situations. Grzedzinski became known for his reportages from Kosovo, Georgia and Indonesia, showing the impact of war and natural catastrophes on the daily lives of people. The Pole is cofounder of the »NapoImages« photo collective and has already won many national and international awards. In 2009, he received the 3rd place at the World Press Photo Award in the category »Spot News Stories«.

During his career the New York based photojournalist Ed Kashi (born in 1957) has worked in more than 60 countries, working numerous assignments for National Geographic, as well as for The New York Times Magazine, Time and Geo. He received countless awards in different disciplines, among them, the World Press Photo Award and prizes for excellent prints and experimental film.



Since 2003, the non-profit multimedia production firm Talking Eyes Media of his wife Julie Winokur is producing with him in collaboration large-scale multimedia projects with a combination of video, audio interviews and photos, often the result of months of work.



»This form allows us to tell the stories we want to tell in a more complex and more complete way than what is possible in print. We reach a lot more people and we can give the people themselves a voice«.
